What to Know About Installing and Choosing a Smart Thermostat

Smart home thermostats are a great way to save money on heating and cooling costs. These devices are ideal for people who want to automate the temperature of their homes. They can also be used by businesses that want to save money on their energy bills. Installing this device is not always a simple process, but you can do it easily with the help of a thermostat installation guide. Below is a guide that makes the installation process simple by taking you step-by-step through the entire installation process. If you don’t feel confident in your ability to install a smart thermostat, hire an expert to do it for you.

Step 1: Switch Off Your HVAC System

Switch off the HVAC system before beginning any installation. This means turning off your HVAC components, including your furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, and electric baseboard heating/cooling. By switching off your HVAC components, you’ll avoid any potential damage during the installation process.

Step 2: Remove the Faceplate

To remove the faceplate, pry it off with a flat-head screwdriver so you can access the wiring behind it. Then loosen all of the screws around the faceplate using a Phillips screwdriver. The faceplate will pop off when all of the screws are removed.

Step 3: Remove Faceplate Wiring

Your HVAC system might have one or more wires that connect to a single terminal on your thermostat. It would be best to pull these wires to remove them from their terminal board and then cut them to length with a wire cutter. If there are no wires attached to your thermostat, leave them alone and don’t cut them short. You’ll only need enough for your installation.

Step 4: Remove Backplate

Next, remove the backplate. This metal plate covers the wiring inside your thermostat and acts as a heat sink. Unscrew the screws holding it in place and pull it off to remove it. You should be able to do this without pulling on any of the wires inside the thermostat.

Step 5: Install the New Backplate

When the backplate is removed, you’ll see the wiring inside your thermostat. This is the part that we’re going to be changing. Place your new backplate on top of the old one and screw it down. Use the screws you removed from the old backplate to hold it in place.

Step 6: Install Wiring

Now that the backplate is installed, it’s time to wire the new thermostat in. The wiring diagram should show you exactly where to connect your wires. There are two terminals on your thermostat that need to be connected: the hot and cold terminals. Use the wires that you cut earlier to connect these terminals.

Step 7: Install the New Faceplate

It is now time to install the new faceplate. To do this, place it over your new thermostat and screw it down. If you’re using a newer model of the smart thermostat, there may be some screws that need to be removed from the faceplate for it to fit properly.

Step 8: Connect Your Smart Thermostat to Your Wi-Fi Network

Your smart thermostat is now installed and ready to use. You’ll now need to connect your thermostat to your Wi-Fi network. This is where the app comes in. The app allows you to set up your thermostat and monitor its performance. Follow the instructions in the app. You can get started using your new smart thermostat.

Things to Consider When Installing a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats are designed to control your home heating and cooling systems more conveniently than traditional thermostats. There are a number of options to choose from, so it’s important to do your research to get the right one for your needs.

The first factor to consider is cost. Smart thermostats can run you upwards of $500, but you do not need to buy the most expensive option out there. Find one with the features you need for your home at a price that fits your budget. There are a number of options in the $100-$300 range.

You also want to be sure that the thermostat you choose is compatible with your HVAC system and any devices that you want to connect it to. If you need help finding a thermostat for your home, reach out to JAMCO Heating & Air Conditioning.
