Why You Should Consider a Ductless Mini-Split Instead of a Central System

A ductless mini-split, often simply referred to as a mini-split, can be a great solution if you’re looking for an HVAC system. A ductless mini-split can be efficient, and it can both heat and cool your home. In addition, the system can be installed in a variety of locations; these units can work well if you want to set up different zones. Another thing that works in a mini-split’s favor is that it doesn’t require any ductwork. Ductwork and central air can be pretty expensive to install, and sometimes, this cost can be prohibitive. A ductless mini-split offers a more practical alternative.

A Budget-Friendly Choice

In some areas of the country, including New Jersey, not every home is built with central air. In fact, central air can be quite rare in some older neighborhoods. In the summer, though, the heat can be oppressive at times, and that’s why some residents consider getting central air installed. Central air can be really convenient to have, and it can potentially increase the property value of a place. Unfortunately, so much work has to be done in order to put central air in an older home. It typically requires a considerable amount of money and time, which people might not have. Sometimes, the layout of a home can make it difficult to even put in the ductwork. In this case, it might be a better idea to go with a ductless mini-spilt system.

If you already have central air and are thinking about putting on an addition or converting a garage or attic into a livable space, a ductless mini-split could be a smart choice. It eliminates the need to modify your existing ductwork, and this could end up saving you some money.

Versatile and Efficient

Ductless mini-split systems can function as both heaters and air conditioners. They can do a great job of keeping your home comfortable, and as a bonus, they’re efficient at what they do. This is especially true in the winter. In contrast to a typical heating system, which has to make heat in some way, a mini-split just has to transfer heat from one place to another. As a result, a mini-split can use significantly less energy than a regular heater requires. This energy savings could positively impact your budget.

You may be wondering where a mini-split finds heat in the winter. After all, the temperature often drops below freezing in the colder months. Well, the heat can come from the air outside your home. More specifically, it’s found in the air that surrounds the outside unit that’s part of your mini-split system. That air can be a great resource because it’s always going to be warmer than the extremely cold refrigerant that runs through the mini-split’s system. The temperature difference is what’s important, and it allows the heat to be effectively transferred from one area to another.

In the summer, the mini-split absorbs heat from your home and sends it outside. It can also remove some of the moisture from the air, thereby reducing humidity levels and making your home feel more comfortable.

Placement Is Up to You

As mentioned, a ductless mini-split comes with an outdoor unit in which heat is exchanged. It also has an indoor component, or in some cases, multiple components. These would be the units that actually cool or heat your rooms. Multiple indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit. They can be placed in a variety of locations, including on a vertical wall or hung from the ceiling. At JAMCO Heating & Air Conditioning, we’ve assisted many people in the Deptford region with ductless mini-split installations, and we can be pretty flexible with the placement. We do recommend that you keep your mini-split away from sources of heat and in open areas. If you have one in the bedroom, consider keeping it somewhat close to the bed to enhance your comfort level.
